DEMONSTRATION IN BELEM SUPPORTS THE BELO MONTE HYDRO OUTAGE

Today, 17.08.2012, demonstrators linked to the Xingu alive and several other organizations and social movements have made an act in front of the building of the Federal Public Ministry, in Belém, demonstrating its full support to the decision of the 5th class of TRF-1, which decided by the nullity of Decree 788/2005 and the stoppage of the works of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant. This decision had as its main reason for not carrying out the indigenous oitivas.

With balloons, banners, songs and slogans the activists reminded society that this plant has no environmental viability, social, cultural, economic, political and even because, if built, would cost $ 30 billion to the coffers of the Government; remanejaria more than 40 thousand people; would dry a stretch of 100 km from the Volta Grande do Rio Xingu, ending with all the local biodiversity; would generate energy only for major industries, and not a kW for the peoples of the region; reach the indigenous villages Paquiçamba, Arara of Volta Grande, Juruna 17 km and Trench Bacajá affecting directly or indirectly more than 15 thousand indigenous people; would impact 11 municipalities, totaling a population of more than 360 thousand people; would produce tons of methane gas, gas 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide for global warming; would attract more than 100 thousand people to the region, but the Government data show that less than half would get employment, increasing violence and social chaos.

The demonstration was welcomed by State Prosecutor Felicio Pontes Jr., driving participants stated that this decision opens the door for the other actions of the Federal Public Ministry are judged with more speed. The demonstrators made a point of remembering that Belo Monte is not a fait accompli, and what decisions as taken by 5th class of TRF-1 reinforce this certainty.
Finally, activists have called on all the peoples of the Xingu, Brazil and the world to come together, strengthening the fight against Belo Monte and all other dams planned to be built in Amazonia, defending the rivers, the forest and the life.
