Brasília-A Federal Court has ruled that no longer issued environmental permits for hydropower plants in the basin of Alto Paraguay, which covers the States of Mato Grosso do Sul and Mato Grosso. The preliminary injunction decision fulfills a request of the Federal Public Ministry (MPF) and State (EPC) in Mato Grosso do Sul, which will present a public civil action in Federal Court in Cushion (MS) to suspend the installation of 126 hydroelectric developments around the Pantanal.

The Court determines that the environmental organs licensors suspend all ongoing environmental licensing processes and do not grant new licenses until the strategic environmental assessment of the entire basin is made. Hydroelectric developments already in place will continue operating, but their licenses cannot be renewed.

According to the Court decision, there is “clear evidence” that the developments are being installed without the observance of basic protective standards, which includes the prior environmental impact study in the entire basin of Alto Paraguay.
