Indians block BR-386 in Iraí, in the North of Rio Grande do Sul

About 300 indigenous spread rocks and tree trunks on the highway. Smaller cars and trucks are using ferry to reach SC.

About 300 indigenous block the miles 2 BR-386 in Iraí, Northern region of Rio Grande do Sul, almost on the border with Santa Catarina, on the morning of Tuesday (18). They protest against the Ordinance No. 303 of Advocacia-Geral da União (AGU), establishing new rules for the exploitation of indigenous lands and revision of demarcations.

The group spread rocks and tree trunks on preventing the movement of vehicles in both directions since at 9:30. Representatives of Indians deal in Brasilia the repeal of the Ordinance. While there is no evolution, they are not meant to clear the way.

According to Adalberto Pegoraro, Federal Highway police, Seberi, light vehicles and trucks of up to 10 tons are using a detour through the city of Vicente Dutra, catching a ferry to New Delhi, in Santa Catarina. However, the larger trucks are stopped on the highway.

The protest mobilized several indigenous localities. They came from the cities of Iraí, Vicente Rodeio Bonito, Dutra, Benjamin Constant do Sul, Frederico Westphalen, La Canada Flintridge and Faxinalzinho.
