The Chairman of the Committee, Senator Paulo Paim (PT-RS) said it intends to hold discussions with the parties involved in the conflict as soon as possible. For this, he intends to approve a petition on Monday (29), when the COUNCIL meets at 9:0.

-We have there a killing, a collective murder, or genocide. No matter the name, what matters is that men and women can Indians losing their lives because of the conflict there installed – said the Senator in Senate radio interview.

The area inhabited by 170 members of the Guarani-Kaiowá ethnic group is disputed for decades by Indians and farmers. In September, the Federal Regional Court 3rd region (TRF-3) determined the repossession, with the withdrawal of Indian families.

The natives resist the order and released the letter, which had great impact in the international press, making mention of collective death and stating that they would fight until the end for the lands that they always belonged to his ancestors.

The message was interpreted in the press and on social networks as a threat of mass suicide, dropped by the indigenous missionary Council (Cimi), linked to the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil (CNBB).

Plenary

The situation of the Indians also worries other senators. On Wednesday (24), in plenary, Rodrigo Rollemberg (PSB-DF) warned of the seriousness of the problem and urged quick action by the Ministry of justice.

The Senator lamented the high violence against Indians and pointed out that, in just the last four years, the number of killings of indigenous peoples in Mato Grosso do Sul was greater than the total of murders of other ethnic groups in the rest of the country.

According to the Senator, a tragedy would undermine Brazil’s image worldwide and would cause enormous damage to ethnicity
