The construction of the port of Açu, LLX, company of businessman Eike Batista, caused salinization of fresh water distributed for consumption and irrigation of crops in the municipality of São João da Barra (RJ). The study was conducted by the Environmental Sciences Laboratory (LCA) of the Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense (UENF), between October and December last year.
Brazilian Geographers Association, accompanying the process in the region from 2011, noted a month ago, the advancement of salinization also in the lands of Brazil. The Group encountered with salt deposits in the soil, which indicates the beginning of a process of desertification.
This advancement of salinization of water and soil, according to the Association, there will be the works of the yard being built in the Açu Industrial and Port Complex. According to geographers, a 13 km long channel and with depth between 10.5 and 14.5 meters being excavated by promoting the penetration of seawater on groundwater and soils of the region.
The water provided to residents of the region presents salinity between five and seven times greater than that of the Paraíba do Sul River. Already the water found in grazing area in the community of black water, has similar to sea salinity: 820 times higher than that of fresh water. This water is drained to the Quitingute channel, used for the irrigation of arable areas of Marshland.
According to geographers, in the region has been the loss of crops and burned areas of pasture without apparent reasons. The State Government, through the State Environmental Institute (Inea), and OSX Brazil itself has recognised the existence of this process.
Given this panorama, the Brazilian Geographers Association calls for the suspension of the works of the port of Açu. Requests further that environmental impact studies be made more free deep and in which it is considered to be the set of impacts that may arise from the installation of the port and industrial complex planned for the region.
