Why ran, members?

“The scene led by MEPs would be laughable if it was not clear what they think of the Indians. The engravatados rushed, desperate, when they saw a small indigenous group advancing in ritual dances by the middle of the House “. The comment is Lacis, a journalist, in an article in Brazil in fact, 4/17/2013.

According to the journalist, “for lawmakers, those men and women are nothing more than wild, dangerous and threatening. Cannot see them as Brazilian citizens, equal to them in rights and duties. The deputies ran for that? Of fear? And why would have fear? Because they know very well what to do and how to deal with indigenous peoples in this country. “

Here’s the article.

The indigenous communities in Brazil are in the process of growth. Since 1991, the second showed the data of IBGE, the increase in population was 205%. Today, Brazil already accounts for 896.9 thousand Indians from 305 ethnicities, and in almost all municipalities (80%) have any autodeclarada person. Even some groups have already considered extinct, as the Plough, arise, get together, take up their roots, form associations and fighting for territory. This means that the struggle that comes inflaming Latin America since the early 90 has arrived here.

It is not without reason that caused both stupor the Declaration of Guarani Kaiowá, Mato Grosso do Sul, to resist to the last man if they are taken from their land. Is that communities are already sick and tired of Government promises and chat. Want to see their rights guaranteed now and are willing to fight. It also puts everyone in an uproar, because, in a way, when the Indians are quietinhos in the villages, are very well regarded.

But, it was enough to lift the Club to that racists and reactionaries on duty already alvorocem. Is what happens today in Santa Catarina, when the time of the explosion of the indigenous land of Morro dos Cavalos. Accepted for several years, living in poor conditions in a few acres, now that they had definitely demarcated lands and fight for disengagement, cause the hatred of relaxed and communities full of “good people”.

It is also what you see in the fight against Belo Monte hydroelectric and the other that could destroy much of life in Xingu. The revolt of the indigenous communities and urge the old Riverside hatred and there are many voices cry out against what they call “obstacles to progress”. Already the cattle ranches and monoculture that destroy little by little the Amazon are seen as “development”. In the same way were judged as troublemakers and opportunistic indigenous peoples who occupied and resisted in the village Maracanã for seven long years, wanting only to preserve a historic space. Were removed by force, as if they were bandits.

Now, the attacks comes from the Government and the National Congress, in which clears proposal for a change in the Constitution, the PEC 215. This proposal aims to transfer to the National Congress the authority to approve the demarcation of indigenous lands, the creation of protected areas and land titling quilombolas, until then it is the responsibility of the Executive power, through Funai, Ibama and the FCP, respectively. The approval of the PEC threatens the already demarcated indigenous lands and prevents any possible future demarcation.

In addition also is in effect the Decree 303, the AGU, which defines that any land already demarcated can be reviewed and taken the communities, just that within them there is something that is in the interest of the people always ready to suck the wealth of the country (minerals, oil, rivers). In other words, is the modern form of domination of the same old oppressors. If were the guns, now it’s the law. And what is more amazing, a law that violates the Constitution.

That’s why the indigenous Brazilians organized decided to make an action in Brasilia, together with the deputies. Know that you can not trust in a House whose inhabitants were elected by economic groups that systematically come preying the riches of the nation and, therefore, won’t hesitate to go over entire communities if this is necessary to their interest. And it is true that yesterday (day 16.04) they were there, trying to talk, trying to enter the House that say, is of the people. But were prevented. But decided not to accept a meaningless enforcement. If the House is of the people, would come. And it was what they did.

They forced the door and entered the House, where the engravatados were unaware. The scene led by MEPs would be laughable if it was not clear what they think of the Indians. The engravatados rushed, desperate, when they saw a small indigenous group advancing in ritual dances by the middle of the House. For them, those men and women are nothing more than wild, dangerous and threatening. Cannot see them as Brazilian citizens, equal to them in rights and duties. The deputies ran for that? Of fear? And why would have fear? Because they know very well what to do and how to deal with the indigenous peoples in that country.

The shameful rush yielded to the indigenous. The Mayor, Henrique Eduardo Alves (PMDB-RN), eventually proposing an Honorable Exit. The House would suspend the creation of the Special Commission that would assess the merit of the proposal for amendment to the Constitution (PEC) 215 and would create a joint group to discuss topics of interest to indigenous peoples. The Indians gathered in the Green Hall talked and resolved by accepting the proposal.

Now is watching because this will not be an easy debate. Both the Government and the power groups that finance the majority of members want to be able to dispose of the indigenous lands that are full of wealth. But, the fact is that the action of the “indigenous April” managed to at least put on the agenda an issue that has been walking since years and does not receive due attention nor the media nor by the members. It was a victory, partial and temporary, but still a victory. What evidence for a + b that only direct action and organized makes life of people next. And, for those who are always in the fight, the scene of the apavoramento of Deputies makes it very clear that they are afraid, Yes, although they have not systematically destroy the rash way of life of indigenous peoples. The lesson is simple: indigenous of April is need to do with these people that does not take into account the wishes of the majorities to be afraid of them. The class struggle goes on here too …
