Maimlessly after becoming among the most discussed topics on twitter of Brazil and the world, this Wednesday (8), the call made by the population through the hashtag #VaiLáGilberto was ignored. Instead of the presence of Minister Gilberto Carvalho, of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic, the Indians occupying the construction of Belo Monte received just a visit from the police. They claim the suspension of hydroelectric works and studies related to dams on the rivers Tapajós and Teles Pires regulated until the consultation of the people of this region.

The Government has spoken out in favour of dialogue, but in doing so by letter last Tuesday (7), assumed a posture of detachment from the issue, making it difficult to resolve the problem peacefully. This morning, the situation has become more critical with the repossession action, determined by judge Selene Almeida, given at the request of companies that build the Belo Monte dam.

In this way, what the Indians will have today will be the visit of the police again, this time to remove them by force of Belo Monte if you do not agree to leave.

And this is not the only threat that indigenous peoples are suffering. Oddly enough, the State that should guarantee the rights of the Indians-operates in such a way as to make them increasingly vulnerable. During the Commission’s session Chamber of agriculture, convened yesterday by the rural Caucus, the Minister of the Civil Cabinet, Gleisi Hoffmann, stated that the Government prepares a new model of demarcation of indigenous lands from which the Funai (National Indian Foundation) loses the power of decision on the matter.

The “ruralists” attempt to delegitimize the Funai, accusing it of defrauding reports and inflating conflicts between Indians and farmers. In response, the Government already put Embrapa (Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation) as a major element in the process. A report done by Embrapa on indigenous lands in the State of Paraná, would have led the Civil House to ask the Ministry of justice the suspension of demarcation processes in Paraná.

During the session with the “ruralists”, Gleisi reaffirmed that stance. She reported that Embrapa must deliver in the next few days studies related to demarcation of indigenous lands in Mato Grosso do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. In practice, what the Government is doing is to put the decision on the demarcation of indigenous lands in the hands of agribusiness.

“Funai is an organ of the Ministry of Justice. Has difficulties, lack of structure, lack of frames. But you can’t treat it as if it were the problems of the Government. The strategy has to be to strengthen the Funai so that she can give an account of its constitutional task, “says Marina Silva.
