Norte Energia will to justice for eviction of construction site of Belo Monte

Brasília – responsible for the installation and operation of the hydroelectric plant of Belo Monte, Rio Xingu, Pará, North Energy Company will use again to the Federal Court to ensure that Indians who occupied one of the construction sites of the enterprise leave the site.

In a statement released this afternoon, the company promises to use all legal remedies to retake the area and ensure the return to work of 4 thousand employees of the Belo Monte Dam Site, about 55 kilometers of Altamira (PA). For security reasons, the operations were suspended so that the Indians were able to enter the site, around 4:0 today (27).

According to Norte Energia, the Group of demonstrators is formed by about 140 ethnic Munduruku Indians. Residents of the Tapajós region, about 800 kilometers of Belo Monte dam construction sites, the munduruku ask immediate suspension of all hydropower projects in the Amazon until the prior consultation process to traditional peoples, laid down in Convention 169 of the International Labour Organization (ILO) is regulated.

This is the second Indian action this month that leads the Consortium plant constructor to paralyze the work on Belo Monte, one of the three major construction sites. The last occupation was in early may, lasted eight days and ended with the Indians leaving the site voluntarily, without need to use police force. Some of them, however, remained encamped in Altamira, mobilized against the undertaking of studies or works in the rivers Tapajós, Xingu and Teles Pires.

To the North, the order of repossession of the construction site, issued by the Federal Regional Court of the 1st region (TRF1), on the last day 8, remains in force. Therefore, the company maintains that the occupants of the area, and may fail to be “civil and criminally liable for the new invasion”. The information has not yet been confirmed by the Court.

Both the North energy as the Belo Monte Consórcio Construtor highlight that the demonstrators did not present any claim and demand a meeting with representatives of the federal Government to leave the place.

Sought, the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic has not, so far, on the requirement. The Agency Brazil has not yet managed to contact by telephone, the leaders of the demonstration.
