Dilma Invites Ministers to discuss indigenous conflicts

Brasilia-indigenous conflict situation in the country is being discussed at a meeting convened by the President of the Republic, Dilma Rousseff, in the Palácio da Alvorada. The Justice Ministers are present, José Eduardo Cardozo, Civil House, Gleisi Hoffmann, and the General Secretariat of the Presidency, Gilberto Carvalho. Also participating in the Attorney General’s Office, Luiz Inacio Adams, and the President of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), Maurício Lopes.

Yesterday (30), an Indian was killed in Mato Grosso do Sul, during an operation of repossession of a farm in Sidrolândia municipality which is located about 60 km from the capital Campo Grande. Jhon abriel was gunned down and, according to Minister Jose Eduardo Cardozo, the Federal Police has opened investigation into the crime. The farm was occupied from the day 15 this month. It is in an area where there is land conflict for over a decade.

In Pará, a group of Indians occupied the main construction of the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River. After four days, they agreed to leave the place. But, for this, was made an agreement with the federalGovernment. Next week in Brasilia, they will meet with representatives of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic and the ministries of Justice and of mines and energy. Until then the Indians will keep the occupation of Belo Monte.

With the agreement, the repossession order granted on Tuesday (28), by subsection of the Federal Court, in Altamira, will not be enforced until further notice.

The agreement allowed Norte Energia, company responsible for the construction of the hydroelectric plant, was allowed to resume the works today, and, since the beginning of the morning, the workers are going back to work. According to the construction company, the Indians who still occupy the construction site are housed at the central office, away from any area of heavy production. It is expected that the activities in the work be normalized until tomorrow (1°).
