LETTER 10: the GOVERNMENT DOES NOT WANT TO HEAR US

We, Munduruku, Xipaya, Arara and Kayapó, occupy Funai. You will understand why.

We arrived in Brasilia on Tuesday (04), and we are holding on the violence all of you since then.

Met with the Minister Gilberto Carvalho on the day we arrived. He called us liars (in other words), refused to sign the receipt of our documents, said that we are not we that we write our letters.

When the meeting ended, Gilberto Carvalho said in the National Newspaper: “we listened at length to talk [of us Indians], criticism, but we were absolutely clear with them, saying that the Government will not give up its projects”. So, we understand the message of the Government.

Two days later, Paulo Maldos gave interview to Radio Nacional da Amazônia: “query is not Yes or no”. Also we understand this message.

We understand that the Government is saying: “we’re going to build the dams in the lands of you, no matter what you say. And even though you are consulted, we will not consider the opinion of you “.

So, we have dealt with the Funai yesterday, Monday, because the Government is not received, for the second time. And even when we received, called us liars and tried to lie to us, divide us. And even said that would build all the dams in our land anyway. We are here in Funai now, but our fight does not stop here.

Our meeting in June 03 day ended without an agreement. After it, you never want to receive us, so it seems that unfortunately we go back to our homes without any response. Because we came to demand peace, and the Government has declared war. Even smiling. We don’t like that.
