Cycle of debates on indigenous issues starts today

The Commission carries out Participatory legislation this week a cycle of debates on indigenous issues. Today, the objective will be to discuss legislative measures allowing compensation to owners of land titles issued by the Government on indigenous areas.

“Some of the areas in process of recognition as indigenous lands are now occupied by families settled by the Government, with definitive titles that need to be desconstituídos,” explains the President of the Commission, Mr Lincoln Portela (PR-MG). “In this case, it seems fair that the holder is compensated so that can resume life in another area.”

Tomorrow, MEPs will debate the constitutionality of the proposed amendment to the Constitution (PEC) 215/00, transferring Executive to the legislature the final say on the demarcation of indigenous lands.

The last debate, on Thursday (20), will be on the Figueiredo report information. After 45 years gone, the document produced by the Government found killings of whole tribes and torture practiced against indigenous peoples in the country, mainly by landowners and officials of the now-defunct Indian protection service (SPI). It was found recently in the Indian Museum, in Rio.
