Munduruku Declaration: researchers, do not come in our land.

Munduruku expel indigenous researchers

Ruy Sposati, Brasilia (DF)
About 25 researchers were removed from the Munduruku indigenous land, indigenous themselves, on this Friday, 10:0 pm Jacareacanga, far west of Pará. The technicians collected samples of the flora and fauna of the region for environmental and feasibility studies of the hydroelectric plants of the Tapajós River, which will affect the Munduruku territory.
According to the natives, the researchers wore uniforms of the Project company, which provides services to the Consortium study group, led by Camargo Correia, GDF Suez, Eletrobrás and Eletronorte, among others.
“What we did was a political action. We knew that had researchers in the region for at least two months … We were behind them and brought to the city. That’s what happened, “explains Valdiner Munduruku, who participated in the operation.
“They were divided into two teams, one for fishing and one of kills. We found the fishing team near Amanhanã. village. We brought the teams head for Jacareacanga, with the other two, so they called all researchers to the city, “reports.
“Everything went well. They [the researchers] had no idea … We talked with them, it was all quiet. Now we are waiting for everyone to arrive, and that Coordinator comes from Itaituba. Let’s not let continue this work, “says Valdenir.
Second statement by the spokesperson of the General Chief of the Munduruku people, Jairo Saw, “the researchers are already in the fourth stage of the study, already in the final stages and expected to submit the final report of the EIA-RIMA in the month of November”.
In public notice released today, the Munduruku said that the Government already knew that the Indians did not allow the entry of researchers in the territory. “We’ll release peacefully this group, but we warn that we will not tolerate this attitude on the part of the federal Government and entrepreneurs who want to build dams”, points out the document, which also requires the suspension of all studies and research related to dams on the rivers Tapajós and Teles Pires “by the federal Government.
The natives fear a violent action of the National Force, which arrived today in Jacareacanga, on a Brazilian air force plane. “We hope that these soldiers have not come to attack us, but rather to defend our right to our land, the law and the Constitution,” the letter argues.
Read our statement of the Munduruku in full:

Munduruku Declaration: researchers, do not come in our land.

We, the Munduruku rio Tapajós, we apprehend a group of researchers who were illegally in our land. They were collecting animals, plants and samples for building dams in our villages. We seize what has been collected by them, all materials, all that was taken and annotated of indigenous lands.

We leave clear to the federal Government that we would not let any researcher on our land.

We’ll release peacefully this group, but we warn that we will not tolerate this attitude on the part of the federal Government and entrepreneurs who want to build dams.

A Buffalo aircraft from the army/FAB landed today in Jacareacanga. We hope that these soldiers have not come to attack us, but rather to defend our right to our land, the law and the Constitution. Because who is wrong is the Government. We are certain.

We demand that the Government stop all studies and research related to dams on the rivers Tapajós and Teles Pires. We know that the research is the first step to enable the construction of dams. We’re not going to let the research and studies. If the Government does not stop, we will give a way. We suggest to researchers that do not come in our land.

Are all reported.
