Housing project is created for the indigenous population in Minas Gerais

The buildings will be getting the largest, greenest sustainability indexes as possible. In each Indian reservation are searched the constructive materials existing in them.

Indigenous ethnic groups of Minas Gerais will rely on a housing project. The Housing company of Minas Gerais (Cohab Minas) and the State Secretariat for integrated development of the North and northeast of Minas Gerais (Sedinor) signed an agreement this week of partnership for the realization of the project Morar na Minas Indígena to ensure decent housing to the Indians who live in the State and preserve their social and cultural identities.

The houses will have approximately 50 square meters, including a balcony on the main façade, living room, three rooms and a kitchen with wood stove. The kitchen is in the center of the building to observe the custom of family reunion in the center of the House. The space will be ventilated by openings at the bottom. The “wet area” will also be located at the bottom of the residence, with the goal of providing hydraulic materials economy and proximity of the wood stove, which will feature coil to heat the bath water.

According to the project, the building will be the largest environmentally friendly, obtaining sustainability indexes as much as possible. In each Indian reservation are searched the constructive materials existing in them, that are already inserted into the constructive culture of each ethnic group, and that could be used in order to self sustainability. The Xakriabá Indians, who live in the City São João das Missões, Minas, were chosen to launch the program. Will be investitures R$ 1.8 million in the construction of the pilot, which will have 50 village houses. The resources have been secured in the meeting between the Sedinor and Cohab.

Indigenous communities have decision-making power in all stages of the project, construction of which will respect their habits and customs.
